Crop tops can feel risky. If you’re anything like me, choosing an outfit in the morning is almost like choosing a statement. As a result, every now and then I play chess with all the possible messages individual pieces send, whilst shopping. Musings like ’is this too ‘trust-fund hippie?’ and ‘this is giving me a lot of the artist formerly known as Prince,’ have kept me in the fitting room for longer than necessary. But I figured something out with my crop top debacle.
Yes, you could project a lot about yourself with a crop top on, but it’s not really the crop top. It’s the whole ensemble. CT’s, much like most other items in our wardrobe, don’t speak for themselves. Another way of saying that is, your clothes don’t speak for you, you speak to/through your clothes. The way you carry yourself, and the style that you bring to the piece is what creates the whole package or “message.” When it’s well executed the crop top can be sexy, edgy, elegant and playful all at once!
“But Mathé…why a tutorial on crop tops now? Summer’s flewn by!” Wear them through fall! They’re fun! Here are some tips I think are helpful.
Mystery: There should be some. This isn’t an old school Britney video…you can’t wear red leather spandex and Skechers anymore either. The easiest way to maintain some modesty is with a high waisted pant, pair or shorts, or skirt. Buzzfeed says the magic number is 4-5 inches of skin between the hem of the top and the waistband of your bottoms. I’d say a little less than that is sexier. Better yet! Throw a blazer on! Blazers are my favorite.
Professionalism: CT’s are devoid of it. Don’t try it at the office, with anything. Good way to get fired is showing up to work looking like a $pRAnG BrEaKeRrrrr.
Mix it up: The best CT statements are the ones where there’s contrast and balance, try an A-line skirt, or a maxi. A conservative bottom along side a more revealing top elevates the outfit. It’s modern and chic.
Don’t have one?: No problem! Knot the front of a cotton tee with a fun bottom and you’re ready for whatever!…Except the office, again, don’t do that.
